In article <4ra1a0$gcc@metro.usyd.edu.au>: | |Would anyone kindly explain the following question taken from the |FAQ? | |> Q5: I've installed the drive as the only device on the secondary interface, |> with the CDROM drive jumpered as SLAVE/SINGLE, and Linux won't |> see it. What am I missing? | |What is a secondary interface? My CD drive is a Mitsumi one linked |to a SB16. I have two hard drives linked to my Promise 2300plus |IDE controller. In this case, is my CD drive on a secondary interface? |I don't remember seeing jumpers at the back of my CD drive, are they |really there? Most importantly, do I need to touch the settings of |the CD drive in order to install Linux? The secondary IDE interface is the one that's at IRQ15 and (forget the address). The IDE/ATAPI interface on the Soundblaster or clone card is usually at the secondary address. However from what you describe you may have a (proprietary) Soundblaster interface CDROM , not an IDE/ATAPI one. The cable is also 40 conductor so it looks like an IDE interface but is not IDE. And there wouldn't be jumpers on a Soundblaster CDROM. Try booting with a kernel with sbpcd support.
