I just installed kermit - it seems like a much more powerful program than
minicom, but it does seem to take some time to learn.
The kermit people apparently don't want an rpm made available of their
program (what's got into them?) - even if it's just going to sit in an ftp
site...luck for us though, this noble person, Jim Knoble, uploaded
ckermit-5a.190.spec.tar.gz which has everything you need to install and
build a kermit rpm - all you need do is download kermit from it's
originator's ftp site, unzip and untar ckermit-5a.190.spec.tar.gz and an
rpm command later you can have kermit and it's rpm installed in your
system.
The only complication I had was that when Jim installed man_db,
he added user 'man' to /etc/passwd, and all his manual pages were owned by
man.man
Anyway, the fix he said could be done in my case where I didn't have
man as a user in /etc/passwd was the following:
(1) add user `man' to /etc/passwd:
man:*:15:15:man:/usr/man:/dev/null
and to /etc/group if it's not there:
man::15:
or,
(2) edit SOURCES/ckermit-5a.190-fsstnd.patch and change:
+ install -m 0444 -o man -g man ckuker.nr
to:
+ install -m 0444 -o root -g root ckuker.nr
-Tony
