: My apologies if this is an old question, but it has been
: about 18 months since I last upgraded my linux system.
: I am getting a new computer on saturday with a 2.1G
: EIDE Hard disk. Now I remember back when I first started
: getting into linux that big disks (>540MB or >1GB) were
: a hassle to use with linux. I was wondering if this is
: still a problem? Can I install linux on any partition
: on the disk. Another thing I remember was that the boot
: partition had to be below 1024 cylinders or something;
: is this till the case?
this 1024 cylinder limit s an old bios limitation (Linux often gets
blamed for it :-) New bios' don't have this prob. It is easy to fix,
just have all bootable partitions fully below cylinder 1024. Linux can
see the whole disk once it is running (it _never_ uses the bios). So
put the / partition fully below 1024, and then mount /usr,/home whatever
once Linux us running.
: I was also wondering, is there still problems getting
: Diamond Stealth cards working with XFree86?
Diamond finally released the specs, and the cards were working within
weeks. that happened about a year ago from memory.
: On a different note, does anyone want to fill me in on
: what has been happening with Linux since around December
: '94 which was the last time I paid any real attention
: to happenings. I gather that Version 2.0 of the kernel
: is due out any day now. Apparently there is SMP support
: now?
multi-platform,SMP,faster,more hardware support, lots of other stuff i have
forgotten :-)
Cheers,
-Robert
