Modem Problems

Hi All,

I have a _cheap_ 14.4 internal modem (Manufacturer: Ellcon); which behaves
inconsistently with linux. It sits on cua2 irq 5, and while I have it working
it will only work 1 out of 10 times I boot. I use minicom, and 9 out of 10
times it attempts to initialise the modem, nothing happens then the ascii of
the initialisation string are displayed one at a time very slowly. I exit and
in attempting to reset the modem minicom takes about 2 minutes to shut down.
I notice after I have the modem working in linux and I attempt to use it in
windows (3.11), it reports an error on initialisation, and then seems to be
okay. The error message is error: not responding; then it tries again and it's
fine.
I have no doubt it's my fault for buying cheap equipment, but after scanning
the SERIAL-howto; I'm not sure how to approach and solve this problem.

Any guidance, or referrals to resources would be appreciated.
Marc.
