To Lars, Pat, Claus-Dieter, Bert, Ken, and all others many thanks
for your interest and suggestions. It was all apprecitated!

Solution: I had to put the -sPAPERSIZE=a4 (note lowercase a4) in the
ghostscript AND The printer had to be set for papersize A4 (note again
the case). With these settings all is OK again in linux-land.
