Slackware install problems

Hi Linux'ers,

I am new to Linux, however have many years experience installing
other Unix based OS's for PC's ie. QNX etc. My problem concerns
installing Linux V1.0.9 using Slackware V2.0.0 - supplied from a
Linux Toolkit CD ROM set I obtained in early 95 (Walnut Creek).
I am installing on a 486 DX33 with 8M RAM and a 1GB HDD (Fujitsu).
The problem is Linux cannot recognise my HDD. The drive is split in
2 (with 500Meg allocated to Linux and the other 500Meg having Windows 95
installed).

So far I have created the boot and root disks, booted the computer using
these disks, and before running 'setup' I am required to use fdisk to
set the dedicated Linux partition as valid. It as this point where problems
arrise. Specifically, fdisk sees the whole 1GB disk as being used by my
first partition (ie. 95), however , with some errors displayed

ie. /dev/hda1 had different physical/logical endings etc.

Its seems Linux fdisk is unable to recognise the Windows 95 partition.
What do I do? Do I need a more recent versin of Linux? Can I just download
a more recent version of OS and keep the CD's for utility s/w ie. X, compilers
etc. Also, I had to install a HDD manager with the newly installed 1GB drive
as BIOS would not recognise such a large drive.

Thanks for any advice,

Emlyn
