It's 21 May 96 15:38, We'll return to stephen.howard@accc.gov.au and All's discussion of Large hd with old bios and Linux st> I have a 2yr old Osborne with that has a phoenix bios that won't st> read a hd >500mb. If I install a 1.2gb drive, can I use st> the bottom 500mb for dos and the remainder for Linux? Or is Linux st> dependent on the bios for accessing the drive's high cylinders? You can run Linux on the higher numbered cylinders no problems. I do that here. You can even put the kernel and necessary boot files on the DOS partition so it can boot off the hard disk! Linux has its own device drivers, which are independent of BIOS limitations. My setup is: First 450MB DOS Next 32M Swap 600M Linux root 150M /home The boot files that LILO needs, as well as a copy of the kernel are kept on the DOS partition in a directory called \LINUX. /boot is a symbolic link to this directory (/msdosc/linux), so LILO can find these files when it's installed. Works like a charm. :-) ... Shhhhhhhhh...listen to the bitstreams. -- | Fidonet: Tony Langdon 3:632/367.2 | Internet: tlang@freeway.DIALix.oz.au | | Freeway Internet Gateway, Melbourne, Australia.
