HELP with Creative IDE CD Install

I have the misfortune of having both a Matrox Milleniumm Video Card,
and a CD ROM drive that Linux (and FreeBSD) will not recognise.

I have a standard dual speed Creative labs CD-ROM/Soundblaster setup.
Although the CD is Creative, it is still an IDE CD. I plug it into
the second ide port on my Triton Motherboard.

Has anybody installed Linux with this configuration? How did you do
it? I would have thought that this CD would be really common.

Thanks
