My thanks to those that answered my cry for help (you know who you
are).

The following is a summary how I solved my problems...

It was pointed out to me that it's part of the fvwm distribution.

(It's strange that I installed an ELF binary of it that I got off
sunsite at some stage, but xpmroot didn't come with that package).

This was a lot more complex problem. It's evidently an FAQ, but I
checked the following and could find no mention of this problem:
  Intel-Unix-X-faq
  comp.windows.x_Frequently_Asked_Questions_*
  XFree86-HOWTO (linux)

(Are there any others?)

I was referred to this very helpful URL:

http://kipper.york.ac.uk/mouse.html

For me the problem was easily solved - once I knew what to look for.

I use what's called a "Champ" brand mouse, which has a switch on the
bottom of it labelled "PC" and "MS". PC referred to ps/2 mode and MS
to mickysoft mode. The _fine_print_ elsewhere in the little manual it
came with briefly mentions that PC will also enable MouseSystem
3-button mode.

Once I put my mouse into this mode (not M$-compatible mode), I then
had to run gpm with "-t msc" (instead of "-t ms -3"), and make sure I
had the Pointer device set to MouseSystems in
/usr/X11/lib/X11/XF86Config.

Thanks again! (Usenet to the rescue! :-)

Cheers
Tony
