discussion of Help required on network configuration

ka> I've just installed linux on my work machine, and having trouble on
ka> connecting to the network. At the boot up time, one of the line says :

ka> SIOCADDRT : Network is unreachable

You haven't supplied any information on your addressing or routing.
This is where the problem is most likely to lie, going by your error
message...

First, is the uni's network running TCP/IP?

Secondly, can you provide your interface configuration and routing
table? These will provide the necessary information to solve your
problem.

Assuming the LAN is running TCP/IP, and you have a valid address, the
problem is most likely that you haven't specified a default route.
Assuming the network is your only connection, and your Ethernet card is
eth0, try:

route add default eth0

If this doesn't work, it's most likely that you're on a small LAN which
is connected to the rest of the campus via a gateway machine. In this
case, you need to find out the netmasdk of the LAN and the gateway
address, thus try the following:

assuming your Ethernet uses IP addresses in the range of 192.1.1.1 to
192.1.1.30, the commands would look like: (don't use these addresses,
they are examples only!!! :-) )

Your gateway to the "outside world" beyond the local net is (say)
192.1.1.1

route add -net 192.1.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.224 broadcast 192.1.1.31
eth0 (put all this on one line)

route add default gw 192.1.1.1 eth0

... Format another planet? (Y/N)
