Dialing into a Linux Box - Problrms

I am having trouble setting up my modem (Banksia MyFastModem 28.8 VFC)
to allow others to dial in. I have the following line in my inittab:

d2:45:respawn:/sbin/agetty -mt60 38400,19200,9600,2400,1200 ttyS1 vt100

What happens is that when I boot and do a ps, the agetty process is
there waiting for a logon, but after a few seconds, the process
disappears. The modem will pick up incoming calls (autoanswer) but the
computer will not respond.

I had the same trouble with a 7 wire null modem to another pc, but not
with a 3 wire???

Is agetty getting some crap or something from one of the control lines,
and jumping past the login prompt and then waiting for a password, and
hence agetty process disapears??

Any help is greatly appreciated.
