Howdy! I know that this will be supremely unhelpful, BUT - I found
myself in a similair situation (bar the Pentium 120 - bit fast for my
wallet), SB16 (Value model, FWIW), kernel 1.2.13, and no sound. Like
you, I read that howto, to no avail.
The solution? I upgraded to kernel 1.3.20 (it was on the November
1995 InfoMagic CD set). After the first recompile, sound worked
fine. Not the most elegant of techie hacker solutions, but it works!
