Please help me pick a backup device

Hello,

after completely upgrading my disk after a headcrash, I now have a
4.3GB Quantum Atlas and an Adaptec SCSI controller.

Since I was lucky enough to recover around 70% of my important files
(thanks to the wonderful EXT2 Filesystem), I managed to get setup again
fairly quickly with little heartbreak.

Now, rather than dice with the devil again, I want to implement a full
backup strategy for my system.

My requirements are:

SCSI backup device - must be stable media
Is DAT a good option at the moment?

Network backup support - I need to share the device with my SPARC IPC,
and want to NFS mount the drive periodically (via crontab)
     to do so.

Drive must be well supported with linux, and also by manufacturer -
no planned obsolescence with being unable to purchase proprietry media.

I want to just backup selected files and directories from each
machine - no need to backup the whole O/S but just elements of each
filesystem.

I want to be able to "scroll" through the tape to get a particular file
much the same as you can select tracks on a CD - if you get my drift.

I have a budget of around $600 to spend - no more.

I did look at the backup howto, and the SCSI one too, but some of the
products seemed unfamiliar to me, and I want an Australian perspective.

Please fill me in - I'd like to get started on this little project!

thanks

rachel
