I've been running the 5x86 for some time now and it seems to work really well under Linux (not so well under Dog). It seems to be worthwhile getting the kernel patches to turn on the various Cyrix speed features. (probably still available from ftp://karman.gcc.edu/pub/Cx5x86Patch002a.tar.gz) >2. Am I right to assume that the 5x86 runs faster or not? Anyone done >any testing on that? Is the bus speed on the 5x86 at least as good as >the 486/120? I haven't personally tested them - but in the benchmarks provided by my motherboard manual it rates the 5x86/100 well above the amd486/120, in fact on most benchmarks it performs almost as well the amd586/133 (the cyrix5x86/133 - easily outperforms the amd chip).
