How to recognize my Mitsumi FX001DE

I'm a Linux newbie and am trying to install for the first time. I have the
Slackware Distribution (3.0?) which I have on a CD-ROM from "Linux
Unleashed" I also have an IBM Aptiva Model 535 with the ARIAsound card and
the CD-Rom mentioned in the subject.

The install "instructions" in the book are not too detailed and I can get as
far as specifying the source as CD-ROM but the installation can never access
it and I go no further.

I am using the "mitsumi" boot kernel which is supposed to be able to support
an IDE mitsumi and I have added the following statements at one time or
another at the "boot:" prompt when initially booting up:

ramdisk mcd=0x330,9 (the coordinates OS/2 has in config.sys)
ramdisk mcd=0x170,15 (the "default" coordinates of the hardware)
ramdisk mcd=0x180,15 (because someone said they had to add 10)

In all cases during boot time of the first diskette I see the message
displayed on my screen that the installation program is trying to access
something at the coordinates I have specified in the "mcd=" statement but
each time the result is that there "is no device"at those coordinates.

Has anyone been successful using this configurationa or can anyone give me
any hints as to what to do next?
