Greetings all,

I respectfully beg all of you to assist me in a problem that I have been
fighting with for well into 3 months now!!

I am running the Redhat 2.01 version of Linux on my DX4/100 with a
permanent 28.8 PPP connection.

The problem :
What I am experiencing is that despite having a 16550A uart, which
linux verifies for me as seen below.

(setserial /dev/cua1 -a)
/dev/cua1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
        Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
        Flags: spd_normal skip_test

(report from dmesg)
Serial driver version 4.11a with no serial options enabled
tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

on a 28.8 modem, no matter what I do, I cannot get a transmision rate faster than
19,200.

In fact the systems acts entirely like it only has a 8250 in there.

The error can be fully reproduced from something as simple as minicom,
within minicom, If I connect to a bbs with a port speed of 38,400 on a 28.8
modem and attempt to download a file, a massive amount of CRC errors will
occur, and the CPS will settle at around 2000 cps which is about 19,200.

Likewise, whilst connected at PPP, transfers from the host machine I am
logged into will come in no faster than 1.6K per second, again about 19,200.

No matter what I try, I cannot get a transfer to occur at 28.8.

If I set the comm speed to 19,200 I get 0 errors.

The ultimate travesty of all this is if I use Windows 95, downloading
the same file from the same bbs on the same computer/modem etc.
it comes through perfectly at 3400 cps, 0 errors!! ( * SIGH * )

Solutions I have tried so far.

o From an Installation of Slackware V3
o Upgrade from 1.2.13 to 1.3.75
o Delete entire system and install Redhat 2.01
o Upgrade from 1.2.13 to 1.3.75
o Upgrade from 1.3.75 to 1.3.85
o Play around a lot with setserial
o Follow every suggestion in the Serial_Howto

o Weep bitterly!!

Please, I implore anyone that can help me to offer any advice possible.

Also, please email any suggestions to

jerel@mpx.com.au

I personally guarantee that as soon as I have a solution, I shall document it
and post it to these newsgroups so others will not have to suffer!! :)

Thanx
Jere
