I just installed Linux yesterday and everything is working fine except for man (so far). When I type, for example, "man mount" I get a blank page. This doesn't happen for all topics. Some like "man egrep" work. I went and had a look in /usr/man and I found that there are cat directories and man directories. Now according to "man man" If there is an up to date pre-formatted copy of the man page in one of the cat directories man will use it, otherwise it will format a page from one of the man directories. My first question is can I delete all of the cat directries (or maybe all of the files in these directories) to save space? Another thing, when I looked into the man directories all of the files were zipped. For example - mount.2.gz. My second question is should the man files be zipped, and if not can i just unzip them? When I was playing around (Linux is great for playing around) last night trying to fix the "man mount" blank page problem, I unzipped the mount.2.gz file and had a look at it. It looked to me like a normal man file. Whats going on? Thanks for any reply.
