Evening all, I recently installed RedHat Linux 2.1 on an older 486 (yes, 2.1 is old, but it was cheap too) that I have and the X installation was really slow (so slow I gave up, estimated time to completion was 4-5 hours). I suspect that the memory that I have (8 megs) is just not enough to do the installation quickly (I was using around 24 Megs of swap and the disk seemed to be working fairly hard). Questions a. Am I right about the memory? I have managed to get fwm to work from Slackware in 8 megs, but it is not fast (but then neither is the machine (486DLC40 with ET4000 video (not ET4000W32)). b. If I am right about the memory what have people used for this installation (and have had good results)?. Is 12 megabytes sufficient or would 16 be better? I like the distribution, and would like to be able to use the X installation and configuration tools. Please reply to k.nissen@auslig.gov.au
