Modem - Minicom/Seyon troubles

I'm having trouble in dialing - I manage to connect alright, but
characters take about 20 seconds each to appear.

I initially thought that it was something to do with speed and
terminal emulation, but I've been through all of the speeds, as
well as changing the terminal emulation, to no avail.

The thing is that it applies to *both* minicom and seyon. I am
at a loss to figure out why it would...

Any suggestions?
