Problems installing Redhat onto an Osborne

I have been attempting to install RedHat 2.0 Linux onto an Osborne DX4-100 VLB
computer, but I keep getting a General Protection Fault. The motherboard is a
Micronics MPower4 using the "X30" chipset. The video device is a Mach64 at I/O
address 0x2e8 (so I can't use DOS COM4). There is no CD-ROM attached and I
intend loading RedHat using NFS. The boot images that I've tried using are :

 - no SCSI; SMC ethernet; IDE, SCSI CD-ROM
 - no SCSI; other; IDE, SCSI CD-ROM
 - no SCSI; none; IDE, SCSI CD-ROM

I've tried changing the following settings :

 - Set the BIOS System speed to slow,
 - Disable external cache,
 - Use each SIMM individually,
 - Reseat the video memory,
 - disable the IDE controller,
 - change the memory wait states to 1 from 0
 - select the buzzer instead of PC speaker
 - removed all cards ; and various combinations starting from a bare machine.

At first the GPF occurred after the partition check and the stack dump
continued scrolling off the screen forever. With all cards removed and IDE
disabled, the Insert Ramdisk 1 point is reached, pressed Enter then the GPF
occurs, with stack dump varying in length each time.

My guess is that the auto-probe over the COM4 addresses is causing a problem
with the MACH64 video device.

Has anyone installed Linux onto one of these machines with success? Is there
any diagnostic tool that I can use to find the problem? Am I wasting my time?
