Linux and internet access speeds

Hi, another question!

I'm not sure if this is more appropriate for aus.net.access than
Linux, but here goes anyway...

I'm fairly new to Linux and still getting everything "set up" nice
how I want it. The (possible) problem is that I don't really know
if my internet connection is going as fast as it could be.

Last Wednesday evening (~6pm) I ftp'ed several files from ANU's
sunsite mirror (as announced here a couple of days ago, thanks!).
I was fairly consistently getting 3.2 Kbytes/sec as reported by
ftp when it finished getting each file. What sort of rates do
other people get??

(I realise it also depends on the ISP but I'm kinda ignoring that
as I'm just comparing the speed using Linux rather than windows 3.11
before where the speed was pretty much all set automatically by
the Trumpet winsock thingo.)

I've got a 486DX2-66, 8Mb RAM, Linux 1.2.13 (from Slackware 3.0)
running XFree 3.1.2. 28.8 Banksia internal modem, using dip to dial-up
and setting the speed to 38400 (not using setserial) and using CSLIP
(and SLiRP at the other end).

Dave.
