You don't have a manual? Did you steal it! :-)
Looking at the back of the drive you have:

        Line_out
                jumpers
                        IDE connector
                                PSU connector

        Jumpers: (one of ...)

                C  S  M
                S  L  A

                      MA = Master
                   SL = slave
                CS = cable select

If the drive is alone, it should be Master, is if is a pair it should be slave. CS should
not be used. Even the EIDE docs recommend against it, as different manufacturers got it
wrong (interpretation before the standard) and it needs a special cable.

I have it as hdd, so my lilo.conf has a line like:

  append="sbpcd=0,ide1=serialize,hdd=cdrom"

I think it worked before I put anthing in there (the ATAPI recognises it as a cdrom, and my
ide1 chips may or may not be buggy), but the manual said not doing so is a risk.
The sbpcd=0 is to switch OFF the sbpcd/panasonic option, this allows the same kernel to
boot the other machine when there is no hd (paranoia or what).

I get /var/log/messages saying the ide1 is on irq-15 (automatically guessed) and the IO
port also. If you are not getting ANY such report, you might have the jumper wrong, cable
upside down, or PSU loose. If DOS recognises it, it's probably the jumper.

A second disk on the same cable will also be invisible if both are master or slave, so you
could move one of the first 2 disks over to have a look. hdparm only really tells you more
detail about what you already know.

	< /dev/cdrom closes the drive door

ls -l /dev/cdrom --> /dev/hdd
