I Downloaded Instructions to setup a PPP connect from linux to my
internet provider, (compuserve). I Followed the instructions, but then
began having problems. So you can fully understand How Im setup,
first ill post the instruction file that i followed.

Note: Im running Linux 1.2.3

HOWTOPPP.TXT
* ----------------------[BEGIN HERE]------------------

HOWTO: Use Linux PPP with CIS (Version 1.5)

No warranties, guarantees, or promises are expressed or implied.
Use at your own risk (ie. don't sue me :) All this has been verified
to
work on a test system. WARNING! Connecting to the Internet opens your
system to the world, especially if you publish your IP address. Make
sure your system permissions and passwords are set securely!

An up-to-date version of this HOWTO is maintained at the following
URL:

                http://www.magi.com/~dmtech/CIS/

I assume your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is CompuServe (CIS), and
you are
running a modem on /dev/modem and interface ppp0.

Below is a list of files; COPY THEM EXACTLY!. Set the owner, group,
and
permissions to those listed using chown, chgrp, and chmod
respectively.

You *MUST* make these changes:
 /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2: edit to execute /sbin/named daemon
  /etc/ppp/cis.chat: 999-9999 = your CIS network phone number
  /etc/ppp/cis.chat: loginID = your login ID
  /etc/ppp/cis.chat:  password = your password
        /sbin/ip-on: 38400 = your modem bit rate (see notes)
         /dev/modem: must be a symbolic link to your modem serial
port
                      (example for COM2: ln -s /dev/modem /dev/cua1)
                      Your modem should be ready to go when reset with
ATZ.

If you use another network, you will have to write your own ???.chat
script!

Edit the files if you want to change the following:
    somehost = your host name
  somedomain = your domain name (or ISP domain like compuserve.com)
     primary = primary name server
   secondary = secondary name server (every domain has at least 2
servers)
        mail = mail server
        news = NNTP Usenet news server

A connection log is created by /etc/ppp/ip-up & /etc/ip-down. Make
sure it
doesn't grow out of control!

Make sure you are operating at 8N1 (8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop
bit)
and not the default 7E1 (7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit). You
can
change this permanently through GO PROFILE.

CLEVER IDEA! If you have a STATIC web page, list your dynamic IP
address there
so that people can reach your roving system :)

Feel free to contact me by E-Mail at dmtech@magi.com if you have any
questions.

After I followed the instructions, everything seemed to be working
pretty much ok. Sometimes i had to type "ip-on" a couple times
before i got a connect, but other than that, everything was fine.

Now, I cant get a connect at all. ill type "ip-on" and sometimes it
will begin to dial, then all the sudden hangup. ..Or, sometimes it
will dial, connect with the remote modem, then sit there for a couple
of seconds .... and then hangup.

Wanting to know what was going on, i added the parameter "-v" (verbose
logging) to the chat commandline, so it would log what was happening.
heres the information i got as a result of that.
