OK, with a weekend of fiddling under my belt I have found the following:
- The /etc/libvga.config file should be moved to /etc/vga/libvga.config.
- The permissions on /dev/console should be 666 (was 644). This was the
major fix to get the svga_* games running! With the proper config I am
able to use my 3 button MouseSystems Mouse fine.
- You need to be logged in as root to run Abuse (like the README said).
No amount the permissions fiddling to get around this.
- Abuse is a.out and as such uses an older version of the libvga.so.?
shared library in the /lib/i486-linuxaout/lib directory. No amount of
fiddling would make Abuse work work with a 3 button MouseSystems mouse
I have to switch my mouse to MicroSoft mode to get it to work. 2 reasons
are that the older svgalib doesn't support MouseSystems mouse, or it's
looking for it's config file in a different place to it's ELF brother.
P.S. I would some other interesting things about sound cards under Linux.
I used to use a PAS16 but now I have a SB16. The SB16 works fine with all
Linux games I have tried. The PAS16 needed a 'ln -f -s dsp1 /dev/dsp' to
run Abuse and get sound to work properly. If I then left the link and ran
Doom the sound would be lound and it would crackle. If I set the link back
to /dev/dsp0 Doom is much better, but Abuse doesn't work! Since going to
the SB16 everything works without any fiddling. I'm going to investigate
this, but I think the PAS16 driver has the minor device numbers mixed up.
Cheers.
