Hi all,

Hope someone can enlighten me..

We have an Acer 486/66 running Linux 1.2.8 (at least it *was*...). It was running
as a web server. A few months ago the hard disk just died. The drive motor just
decided it was tired after about six months.

It was replaced with a new drive and all was well until it hung up some time in the
last day or so with a kernel panic as it was unable to access part of the
filesystem. When I got to it this morning, it was dead. The root filesystem is
trashed. I can (could?) access the other two partitions okay.

I tried fsck, from an emergency boot disk etc. to no avail. It just got worse. So
I tried to reinstall the root filesystem in its partition, with the idea that I
could replace the original filesystem from the backups.

But now when I run SETUP I can't even format the partition!

When I run the FORMAT option from the SETUP menu I am getting errors like:

hda: Read_intr: Status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest error}
hda: Read_intr: error 0x40 {Uncorrectable Error} LBAsect=xxxxxx, sector xxxxx
hda: Read_intr: error=0x10 {SectorIDnotfound} LBAsect... etc.

Screens full of them....

Can anyone tell me what this all means? Has anyone had similar problems? Has it
"eaten" another hard drive? Why...? Incidentally, it now hangs up halfway through
the LILO prompt if allowed to boot from the hard disk. (?)

any suggestions greatly appreciated, and would prefer email if possible...

thanks,
michael
