Linus' patches for the kernel work fine. My current kernel (1.3.67)
is the result of patching all the way from 1.3.60. It is rare to
find problems with the patches and the most likely cause for a failure
is that you have made your own changes to the sources.
My preferred way of working is to put the patches into one directory
(/usr/src/linux-1.3) and cd to the directory containing the kernel
source (/usr/src/linux). Then, for example, I would do:
zcat ../linux-1.3/patch-1.3.67.gz | patch -p1 -s
This will usually produce no messages (the -s option is essential here).
Any message indicates that a problem has occured. If per chance lots
of messages were received, you can begin to track down the reasons by
looking for the .rej files, e.g. by:
find . -name '*.rej'
You would normally want to clear up the unwanted .orig files with a command
like:
find . -type f -name '*.orig' | xargs rm -f
(but be careful with such powerful commands).
