Hello everyone, Now that I've got linux running happily on my system, I'd like to get some work done with it, ie. actually be productive. Could you please post a list of linux applications with the equivalent power and features of these Windows applications which are freely available on the internet (public domain) and do not require a heap of hacking and training to get going. Apps which use XWindows would be preferable. I am using the 1.1.59 kernel with Slackware 2.0.something(!) distribution. 1. Word for Windows - font formatting, alignments, WYSIWYG, tables, OLE or graphics within documents. 2. Relational database (like MS Access) with comprehensive query features and report writer/printer. 3. Spreadsheet with graphing capabilities. 4. TWAIN driver for Mustek CG-8400 hand scanner, and photo-editing software. 5. HTML editor (preferably WYSIWYG, like Hotmetal). 6. Graphics / photo retouching / draw (like Coreldraw or paint shop pro). In a word, I need equivalents to MS Office for medical research work, and the graphics/HTML editor packages for web publishing. I would be most happy to dump Windows for critical work such as my research, but I don't have the time for faffing around with too many man pages or recompiling (I'm a medical student, not a computing/IT student); I'm not all that cluey with coding, scripting and so on. However, until I find good public domain replacements, I'm forced to stick to Windows. Please email me (preferable), but posting to this newsgroup will be fine. Any appropriate ftp addresses would be most welcome, I would be most grateful. Thanking you all in advance, Kelvin P.S. Anyone know where I can buy Caffrey's Irish Ale in Sydney? :) ___________________________________________________ Kelvin Lau kelvinl@magna.com.au Sydney, NSW Australia
