I will put in my 2c for the alpha of next release of the emacs news
reader, September GNUS (sgnus). It can be found at
<URL:http://www.ifi.uio.no/~larsi/sgnus.tar.gz>. I have just switched
to it for mail and news.
Here are some of its features:
1. X windows pull down menus for mouse freaks.
2. Adding so called virtual servers which can suck up news
or mail off various nntp-servers, mail spool or news spool
areas. It is easy to configure so that mail from various
mailing lists gets sucked into, what appear as, virtual news
groups.
3. Article caching. Each article can be sucked onto your local disk.
I haven't tried this but, from the manual,
So where does the massive article-fetching and storing come into the
picture? The `gnus-jog-cache' command will go through all subscribed
newsgroups, request all unread articles, and store them in the cache.
You should only ever, ever ever ever, use this command if 1) your
connection to the NNTP server is really, really, really slow and 2) you
have a really, really, really huge disk. Seriously.
You can also mark any interesting article as persistent, which stops it from
expiring. I don't know anything about uucp, but this might be a good replacement.
4. Asyncronous article fetching. Sgnus can open a second nntp connection
in the background to prefetch the next n unread articles.
5. Automatic saving of outgoing mail, and news.
6. Extremely configurable (in elisp ;) )
Seriously this is a next generation news/mail reader that has almost
every feature you would want, and lots to help you with large volumes
of news & mail. It isn't bug free, but I have found it usable with
emacs19.30,
Andrew
