This is, I think, either a modem or a com port problem. I hope someone can help me pinpoint the exact reason for dropped/missed characters. Because the same problem occurs whether I use SLIP, CSLIP or PPP, or simply a terminal connection, Im fairly sure it is not a problem with the actual software, but possibly the modem settings I use. If I use a straight out terminal program, it seems to drop received letters fairly frequently - nearly every word loses a letter or two. Sounds like a modem problem - but to continue: When FTPing under either SLIP or PPP, transfers are *very* slow. Ill stick to the PPP example... using kernel 1.2.13, and a 14.4k modem with v.42. If it matters, the computer is a Pentium 120. FTPing a large file: Initially the modem receive light comes on in bursts, but gets slower, until several/many seconds go by before any sign of receiving. If I check the PPP stats with ifconfig, it shows *lots* of receive errors. (Like 96 received, 140 errors, or sometimes even more). No packets dropped, or overrun. No transmit errors. I have tried altering the MTU & MRU, (my provider is set at 1500) and using setserial, have set /dev/cua1 speed to all sorts of things, from spd_vhi to 14400... I have enabled CTS/RTS. With the modem, I have tried disabling software compression, enabling it, and all sorts of combinations... The bottom line is that transfers are ridiculously slow: sometimes as low as .1K per second. I know the problem is at my end, because from my Mac at work, FTPing the same file, I get about 1.5K per second, and the lights on the modem flash like crazy. I have tried using the same modem settings I have for the Mac, on the PC at home, but to no avail. I have tried with 3 different modems, all have the same result. 1) Banksia MyModem 14.4k 2) Hayes Optima 28.8k 3) XStreama 14.4k I only mention their brands, because some kind person out there might have an initialisation string that works for one of them... Any suggestions, however crazy, will be appreciated. Having tried the (to me) obvious things, Im starting to run out of ideas. cheers, Howard Coe -- Howard Cock Curriculum Solutions P/L howardc@castlemaine.net.au #include <stdDisclaimer.h>
