Well you'll have to also ask yourself which "brand" of Linux you want - ie Slackware, Debian, etc. IMHO I would advise you to get hold of a friendly expert and use what they suggest (which should be what they currently use). When you're more experienced, THEN try looking a little further afield if you wish. Another approach, especially useful if you can't latch onto an "expert friend", is to buy a book such as "LINUX Unleashed" which I've found invaluable to date (I'm a first time Linux user myself), or "Linux Configuration and Installation" also quite good. Both very useful if not essential, both purchased at a University Co-Op bookshop, and BOTH had a CD-ROM included with the book which had both a full Linux distribution and some HOWTO's. Whether you use the Markets (see earlier post) or the book approach (see above) both will probably leave you with other than the latest version of Linux - not necessarily a bad thing. Note however that books are rarely that up-to-date, and that people are unlikely to sell their most current version of Linux at the markets. Alternatively you can purchase the newest up-to-date version from "informed" computer retailers (sorry but I'm not from Melbourne) BUT be wary as the prices can vary quite widely for the same new version. The "Green Guide" would be an excellent place to start searching. Good Luck, Chris. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "So long, and thanks for all the fish."
