I have the same sort of setup as you:
- Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM (S3c764 chipset)
- Pentium 100 PCI, 512 cache
- etc. (no scanner)

I just recently installed the Slackware 3.0 distribution of Linux in a 300M partition
on my 1G HD. I also have OS/2 warp and PC-DOS on seperate partitions. OS/2's
boot-manager handles all 3 bootable partitons like a dream.

I had no trouble setting up X either. I installed Xfree86 3.1.2 and it recognised my
 video card straight away.

Sorry, can't suggest a book cause I'm still looking myself.

Kev. (in a hurry, sorry about typo's etc)
