The utility Carlos refers to doesn't operate on the filesystem. Instead,
it is a set of scripts that mimic a 'safe' rm which backs up everything in
a hidden directory, an undelete which retrieves from the directory, and
a purge command which wipes out old backups.
Pro: HD space is cheap and the scripts are free.
Con: the utilities don't protect you against other kinds of mistakes, like
accidentally over-writing files.
If you want *real* protection, put all your critical data on a DOS FAT
partition and use Norton Utilities to recover from disasters. I took this
approach, and saved myself $5K when I accidentally nuked some very important
files. I'd've been screwed if I'd put that data on a Linux partition...
