I beleive that the Andrew File System does this...at least to some extent.
It backs up files in an OldFiles directory. This shouldn't be too hard to
implement under ext2, although I'm far from an expert on this.

Why not complete it with ACL's and the proposed undelete system. Nothing is 
so great it cannot be improved. A transaction log would help, as well.
