The best method is to pick up a recent 1.3.X kernel and turn on IP_MASQUERADE. If in doubt, read the source. There is some (but not very much) documentation in the kernel documentation directory. Alternatively, connect the Linux box to the internet using SLiRP rather than a real PPP/SLIP link. Then your Linux box will know itself as 10.0.2.15, so you need to assign other addresses in the 10.0.2.X range to your private LAN. That works until the outside world starts sending packets in ... then they don't get into your LAN. You can't broadcast your IP addresses to the world because you don't have any. Alternatively, you can ask an ISP to assign you a bunch of IP addresses (unlikely) or get your own class C (even more unlikely, and somewhat wasteful). : I can go about setup linux as a gateway but what about windows/windows95 how : do i go about setting it up as a little LAN with linux as gateway ? There is very little to do on the Windows side (which is good because the windows box isn't really capable of thinking and not really good at doing gateways). : does the work involve similar to setting up PPP connection on Win95 : machine ?
