Sounds like the same problem I got a while ago. I traced it back to 
the source. My problem was due to the fact that after the password is input
to the program, it only checks it with the entry in the passord file
with "strcmp" which needs a null to terminate the comparison that sometimes
is not there due to the dunamic nwture of the system.
I modified it to "strncmp" and put the length as len(passwd) and rrecompiled
the program and it worked fine since then.
May be you can find the source to your ftpd program and check for this
error.
