It doesn't seem very likely that it's thunderbird causing it (although 
it could be). I've been using thunderbird for quite some time now and 
received lots of emails with sometimes quite large photo attachments and 
i've never had that problem.

That's a windows-style approach and it's probably not going to fix it.

I dunno about mandriva, but on fedora it's all in ~/.thunderbird . But 
if you open the address book and click on the 'Tools' menu item and then 
'Export', you can save your address book in your home directory and then 
import it after you've reinstalled.

Perhaps you should try reverting to the previous version.
