Well, ZTE make rubbish phones, so i'm not surprised their wireless
dongles don't work with Linux. I was pleasantly surprised the other day
when i plugged a Huawei 3G wireless dongle into my Ubuntu 9.04 laptop
and it just worked - i didn't have to do anything at all, except click
on the network in NetworkManager.

I think the dongle i tried was the e220, but i believe other Huawei
dongles work too.

In general, i find it best to avoid having anything to do with Telstra -
and i'd never consider getting hardware from them unless it was
absolutely unavoidable.
