You start with the live cd and then mount the hard drives.

type

fdisk -l

to see where the hard drives are.  For instance,

sudo mount -o rw /dev/hda1 /media/hda1

will auto-mount a hard drive at hda1.  (provided you have made the
directory with 'sudo mkdir /media/hda1')

The you will be able to see what you have.  It sounds like the distro
is stuffed, that is, it would need to be re-installed.
A memory stick should mount automatically on the live CD so you can
transfer the contents to that once the HD is mounted.
