I have tried to install Ubuntu Hardy original from both a CD and a DVD, and Xubuntu from CD. In all cases, the installer crashes before the bootloader is created, and I am sent to the LiveCD desktop. Grub packages are installed, but there is no /boot/grub directory. Attempts to create the directory and its contents fail. I seem not to be alone with this problem, but it plainly doesn't affect everybody. All that I could find on the Web were forlorn cries for help. The docos don't get so basic. Is there any known fix?
