I was (un)lucky enough to be admining a server (at 4zzz in Brisbane) many years ago now (2001 maybe) and it had a virus. It was ugly! But that got in from a person installing it from a rootkit, via a vulnerability in an old version of sshd. This was before automatic updates and there were 3 of us co-sysadmining the servers and LTSP X terminals - and nobody had specific responsibility for keeping stuff like that up to date, so it got overlooked. Anyway, it was a nightmare trying to get rid of it. I tried for a couple of days and then another mug took over - and had to reinstall the system several times, i believe! > If you are able to access a Windows partition, it has been suggested that > you install Windows antivirus as a precaution. Apart from anything else, windows virus checkers only catch about 40% of viruses, anyway. And can they find viruses in ELF binaries??? -- http://SnapAndScribble.com
