It isn't the toner cartridge that is involved. Those monster printers
require a service every 600K pages*. It was going to cost $350, plus
labour, plus travel, which meant that I wouldn't get much change out of
$800. So I checked and found that Kyocera ad a duplexing A4 network model
(postscript?) for ~$700, so we decided naah.

competition in toner supply and that every $600K service made the economic
unworkable. so we used it until it started continually streaking.

I haven't been able to source a service kit cheaper either, unlike the
belt for my HP pen plotter. when it broke, instead of the $US200+ being
asked on the internet everywhere, I found I could buy an identical belt
from a online hobby shop (smallparts.com.au?) for $5.

But to get back to what you said about starter cartridges being
underfilled, yes been a rort for years.

FYI, in the case of the HP5si, the last toner cartridge I purchased was
~$285. If it wasn't for the fact that I have a new unused one in the
stationery cabinet, the printer probably would have joined landfill
and scrap metal recyling.

This was why I ask fr details of any economical supplier of HP service
gear. I really doubt if any beasty exists.
