I am having another attempt at Linux. I have used Puppy to retrieve data from several local Windows computers whose HDDs have failed, and I am impressed. Over the years I have tried various flavours of Linux and never had complete success. I keep hoping to install a minimum Linux onto one or more old laptops; enough to browse, email, and do some word-processing. I now have a CD with two versions of Puppy (I think). It takes longer to boot than XP does and seems to hang with a frozen cursor. This is on a desktop. Is there somewhere I can read and perhaps download a simple set of instructions for installing Puppy? Can Puppy be loaded onto a laptop's HDD as the only operating system so as to boot quickly? Most sites that I have visited seem to demand much more day-to-day knowledge of Linux in order to understand them than I have.
