startx for Gnome , kdm for KDE

Or if you have Gnome/KDE install and want to boot straight into the GUI ,
then edit the file /etc/inittab and change the runlevel from 3 to 5 in the
section

id:5:initdefault:

Being the console mode , do you mean booting up into runlevel 3 , which is
text mode with just a login prompt ?

Not really familiar with Ubuntu / Debian , but I think the commands are

sudo apt get install kde
sudo apt get install ubuntu-desktop

sudo apt get install gnome
sudo apt get install gnome-desktop

I have read that there is a problem installing the packages if you are
running ubuntu 8.04 ( Hardy ) , but there is a fairly easy workaround.
