Using Linux to access Windows hidden files

After a hard disk crash I re-installed my XP system, onto an almost new hard
drive that had been used on a Vista machine.
Now whenever I run a scan of AVG or SuperAntiSpyware. most of the scanning
time is used scanning thousands of files that begin \$RECYCLEBIN........
The very helpful support staff at SuperAntiSpyware tell me that these files
are hidden Vista files, not accessible by XP even if XP options are set to
display XP hidden files.
So, I can't get rid of them, or look at them because XP hasn't the
permissions to look at Vista hidden files.
We even tried accessing them from a Vista machine via the local network, but
to no avail. Any suggestions?
Could I access these files using Puppy, or some other distro of Linux?
