I'm trying to use netcat to automate a telnet session to a newsserver
and it's proving difficult. Here's how the session goes using telnet:
$ telnet eu.usenet-news.net 119
Trying 69.16.176.253...
Connected to newsfarm.ams2.highwinds-media.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 (newsfe09.ams2) -- Welcome (Tornado v1.2.7.560)
authinfo user xxx
381 More Authentication Required
.....etc
Here's as far as it goes using netcat:
# { echo authinfo user XYZ;echo authinfo pass XYZ;
} | netcat -i 1 -w 5 eu.usenet-news.net 119
200 (newsfe23.ams2) -- Welcome (Tornado v1.2.7.560)
#
Now, this could be termed a "problem" server. Not all so-called
"telnets" will correctly connect to it. For example, the "telnet"
on Puppy Linux gets no further than what I've shown above for
netcat. Puppy's telnet hangs right after the 200 (newsfe23....)
line and doesn't make use of the authinfo line or any further.
I've tried a couple of netcats, on two linuxes, all 3 netcats get
stuck identically with this particular newsserver.
So I installed putty. Using putty, I need to set it to "raw"
in order to have it correctly connect to this server and accept
authinfo data, otherwise it hangs in the same way as do the
netcats. (For most servers, putty needs to be set to "telnet".)
Can anyone see a setting I can resort to in netcat to achieve
the equivalent in netcat of putty's raw mode?
