Because it is not possible to install version 4.52 onto an existing desktop it is desirable to somehow automatically move the objects from the old desktop over to the new. Searching on the web the only facility that I could find was Object Desktop's "Object packager". Of course you have to have OD installed on both the source desktop and the target desktop before you can use the facility. I found that I could not simply restore the objects onto the target machine. By forcing the process and inappropriately using Travelling Workplace (another story some other time) I wrecked the desktop so badly that the only remedy was to reinstall! What happened was that everytime I tried to restore an object I'd get the following popup: +--------------------------------------+ |Class Registration Advisor | | | | A missing WPS class was encountered | |which was present when this package | |was created. The WPS class needed | |to reconstruct package objects is not | |registerd and its module cannot be | |located. | | Please enter the path to this class'| |module on your system. | | | |WPS class name: Practice Moov | |Class module originally located at: | | D:\MMOS2\DLL\PRMOOV.dll | |Register class with module located at | | (fill in a box) | | | |Choice boxes: | |Register Ignore Cancel | +--------------------------------------+ Well in ignorance I tried Ignore. The object seemed to be created OK. I then blithely went ahead and did lots of them. Sometime during that process many links got broken and, wildly, some objects properties got changes to entirely different files! Then in the process of trying to straighten things out D:\OS2\MDOS and everything in it got deleted during a shutdown reboot cycle!!! So that is what you can get if you have "WPS problems"! After reinstalling and being pressured to somehow get Object Package to work I found that objects could be recreated by OP first producing a REXX script. Then you'd run that. Some scripts would prompt for certain missing classes to be (re)created. I found it best to choose not to re-create. One of the classes was to re-create an enhanced folder class. But the folder that was to be re-created was already in an enhanced folder and would inherit the properties of that enhancement. By trying to double up on "enhancement" the WPS didn't like it at all. I think the WPS hung :-( I think my installation of OD in the source desktop was probably faulty but what happened has disappeared into the mists of time. Once I got the hang ot creating and running the REXX scripts I could quickly recreate/migrate lots of objects without wrecking the new desktop. Very good! :-) Additionally, because I wanted to place the executables into a more suitable directory structure, I could edit the paths in the text file REXX scripts before running them and they'd come up with the new properties reflecting the new directory arrangements. A note about the OS/2 registry OS2.ini and OS2Sys.ini are closely connected with a "Desktop" directory usually x:\Desktop (where x is the boot drive). Playing with Travelling Workplace which can create up to 36 desktops more desktop folders are created usually labeled x:\Desktop1, x:\Desktop2 and so on. Well in confusion at one point I deleted the wrong x:\Desktop# and the WPS would not come up, until MAKEINI was run. Most of the contents on the desktop are stored in the registry. You can populate and depopulate the desktop by having a range of registry files with different contents, changing which one config.sys points to and rebooting. Everytime MAKEINI is run a new desktop directory is created. Your filesystem then loses elegance. I haven't worked out how to edit the registry to point to a renamed directory.
