You can, with some programs. HPFS doesn't forbid dos programs from
seeing the full name, but most can't handle it. For example, the
following Turbo Pascal code:

program test;
uses AnotherTestUnit;
begin
.....

produces:

Error 15: File not found (ANOTHERTESTUNIT.TPU)

if you try and compile it on an HPFS partition, unless you actually have
the unit there called 'anothertestunit.tpu', or the source code.
Unfortunately, turbo truncates the filenames when you try and save them,
so you need to rename them manually from an OS/2 session every time you
modify the file - one reason I keep a FAT partition around. It should be
pretty easy to use this feature to write pure DOS programs that can
happily read and write files with long names on HPFS partitions. Its
probably just a matter of using the right DOS call, and reserving a
bigger buffer...
