Substantial improvement in extended stability

For many years (from Warp 3 days) my WPS would hang up after about 7
days uptime. The uptime that others mention in comp.os.os2.* of 42 days
and more has always been a pipe dream for me.

By deleting the "Applications" PM_Abstract:Icons and
PM_Workplace:FolderPos I got nearly 20 days uptime. I was going to wait
until 21 days before posting this but I stuffed something up in a VPC-NT
session and had to reboot.

The lack of extended stability was not found by Xfix, Checkini,
Cleanin or Inimaint. The action that did the trick (or made substantial
improvement) was from a suggestion in XWorkplace's User Guide FAQ
XShutdown questions section. The thing that caught my eye here was the
point made that the WPS "remembers" the folder positions that were ever
opened, "even if the folder was opened 5 years ago"!! The other notable
point in that FAQ section was that for ini files above 1MB, Moller
suspects that the PM runs out of shared memory. My OS2.ini was slightly
larger than 1 MB.

When I migrated from Warp 4 I used Object Desktop Object packager
utility to "speedily" migrate over a range of objects. That method may
have brought over a lot of accumulated junk in Warp 4 as well!

Anyway after removing the above two applications the size of OS2.ini
dropped to about 600 kB. I had to manually add back in quite a few
icons. I wondered whether removing PM_Abstract:Icons was really
necessary. After getting my desktop back to how I like it OS2.ini is
now just a little over 700 kB.

The WPS now stays rock steady for days and days. Further when I run
VPC, WPS's stability is not obviously affected unlike previously. This
makes for lots of satisfaction because by being able to leave VPC-NT4
running all the time I have finally achieved my objective of having two
PCs in one. When I want to listen to a digital rebroadcast of some item
on our government radio or TV, it's now about a few mouse clicks away -
I don't have to wheel myself over on my office chair to my separate
WinXP machine.

I listen via RealPlayer 8 which gets automatically called up in
VPC-NT. I have never been able to get RP8 to run under ODIN.

Now I want a more powerful CPU to make the VPC go a bit faster. ;-)
