I was wondering if someone could explain this output from top on a solaris 2.5 system CPU states: 0.6% idle, 21.8% user, 22.0% kernel, 55.6% iowait, 0.0% swap idle, pretty self explainitory, user is the user process'? kernel is the kernel process'? I assume iowait is something to do with time the system spends waiting for io from discs? And sawp is the time spent swapping memory to disk? If a system is slow, how can this information help in finding the bottleneck. Eg if swap is high, then more real memory could be needed. iowait high, neededs fast drives? etc etc.. What's a possible fix for a high iowait percentage? Pointers to any documentation on this is very welcomed.
