Help: Sparc lx console dead

I have a sparc LX running Solaris 2.3. I had some problems so I exited
from openwin expecting to get a logon back. The X server did not exit
so from a remote terminal I killed it. I got the logon back but now
when I hit return I keep getting garbage like ^@^@^@^@ etc. Every
now and then the login propt will appear. I can send info to the screen
like:
    ls -la > /dev/console
and all is well but when I
    cat < /dev/console
I see the same garbage on my remote terminal. Whats going wrong....
Restarting the machine is NOT an option at the moment as there is a
process that has been running for a month with still a few weeks of
computations to go.

Any ideas.
